As tempting as frozen lakes and ponds might look at this time of year, the ice around Regina isn’t yet safe for walking or skating.
Regina Fire and Protective Services is urging everyone to stay off the ice that has formed on Wascana Lake, Wascana Creek, storm channels and retention ponds. The ice may appear solid at a glance, but the fire department said looks are deceiving.

“Residents should not walk, ski, skate, bike or play on any body of water,” the fire department said in a release. “Although ice may look safe, it is not.”
The department also suggested keeping dogs on a leash when walking close to any frozen body of water.
“If a pet breaks through the ice, residents should not attempt a rescue as it endangers themselves and others. Instead, call 911,” the fire department advised.
Parents and guardians were encouraged to teach kids to stay away from the ice.
If you see anyone, particularly children, close to thin ice, the fire department encouraged placing a call to police.
