The Stars, who are searching for their first ever Esso Cup, looked to get out to a hot start at the Women’s U18 National Club Championship but the Étoiles de Laurentides-Lanaudière had different plans.
A natural hat-trick in the second period by Maika Gauthier gave the Étoiles a 3-0 lead. The Stars then fought back with goals from Halle Duchene and Sadie Green to bring the team within one before the end of the second period.
The third period however was all Étoiles, as Ann-Laurence Dutil and Miranda Denille both scored goals late powering them to a 5-2 win.
Duchene, who scored 20 goals and recorded 21 assists in 30 games this season, leads the tournament in points with four in two games, Green is tied for second with two in two games.
The Stars went with Adrianna Bashnick in between the pipes for Monday’s game and she stopped 17 of 22 shots.
The Stars (1-1) are now looking to bounce back against the Edmonton Jr. Oilers on Tuesday.
The Saskatoon team beat the Battleford Sharks in the Saskatchewan Female U18 AAA Hockey League Final to move onto the West Regional Championship against the Eastman Selects, which they won 2-1.
The Stars are also looking to improve on their 2019 fourth place result at the Esso Cup. In 2018 they took home the silver medal, their best result.
Saskatoon has four players committed to playing college hockey — forward Kolbee Ashe is committed to Rochester Institute of Technology, forward Kinley Brassard is committed to Minot State University, Duchene is committed to Mercyhurst University and Claire Moorman, who plays defence, is committed to the University of Manitoba
The top four teams in the round-robin will advance to Friday’s semifinal. Currently the Stars have three points and are tied with Étoiles de Laurentides-Lanaudière and the Edmonton Jr. Oilers for first place in the standings.
