The U18 AAA Saskatoon Stars couldn’t hang onto a 3-0 lead on Wednesday night, as the Lloydminster Steelers rallied to win 4-3 in overtime on home ice at the Esso Cup.
The Stars got off to a dream start, with Ayla Anderson scoring 1:11 into the first period to put Saskatoon up 1-0.

Shortly after Anderson’s goal, Steelers forward Payton Farkash was sent to the box for a body-checking penalty. On the power play, Stars rookie forward Sadie Green put a shot past Steelers goalie Harlee Houle to make it 2-0 for the Stars 8:36 into the opening frame.
Just over a minute after Green’s goal, the Steelers found themselves shorthanded again after another body-checking penalty for Skylar Heinrichs.
Claire Moorman scored the Stars’ third goal of the night with 9:48 remaining in the first period to extend the lead to 3-0.
With time winding down in the first period, the Steelers were able to find some life when Sadee Reinders scored on Stars goalie Tarynn Sutter on the power play to slice the Stars’ lead to 3-1 heading into the second period.
The Steelers didn’t score again until late in the second period. Saskatoon’s Avery Barry took a tripping penalty with less than five minutes remaining in the second, and the Steelers’ Raevyn Neahr converted on that power play to trim the Stars’ lead to 3-2.
In the third period, the Steelers pressed late and finally were able to tie the game off the stick of Jamie Hensch to make it 3-3 with 2:57 remaining.
After 60 minutes, the teams headed to overtime where the Steelers completed the comeback.
Heinrichs scored 2:30 into overtime to give Lloydminster the 4-3 win and earn the Steelers their first victory of the tournament.
The Stars’ record for the tournament now drops to 1-0-2, putting them in third place in the overall standings. Saskatoon will face the Eastern Stars out of Prince Edward Island on Thursday at 3 p.m. Thursday is the final day of round-robin play.
The Steelers now have a record of 0-2-2-0, and will face Étoiles de Laurentides-Lanaudière of Quebec in their final game.
