A new grant program from the Government of Saskatchewan will provide funding for schools looking to build or upgrade playgrounds.
The new program, which is expected to start accepting applications this fall, will provide up to $50,000 in matched funding to schools that are building playgrounds or upgrading their existing equipment.

The criteria and guidelines will be announced at a later date, but the Saskatchewan Ministry of Parks, Culture and Sport said the grants are expected to support about 75 projects each year. Annual funding of $3.75 million has been set aside for the program.
“Our government recognizes that every child deserves a place to play,” Parks, Culture and Sport Minister Alana Ross said in a statement.
“Playgrounds are crucial to child development and are foundational pieces of community infrastructure that support our health and wellbeing.”
Ross said planning and developing school playgrounds takes time, and the government wanted communities to know about the program before it launches “so they can incorporate this new funding into their planning process.”
The program will be administered through a partnership with the Saskatchewan Parks and Recreation Association.
“Playgrounds are crucial to child development and are foundational pieces of community infrastructure that support our health and wellbeing,” association president Darcy McLeod added.
