A Regina man and his family are shocked at a massive increase they will need to pay for long-tem care.
Gerald Ennis suffers from ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, and has been a resident at Wascana Rehab in Regina since September.
They recently received a letter from the provincial government that his rent would increase 150 per cent.
“I was paying $1089 and the letter we have now, I pay (about) $2630,” Ennis told reports outside the facility Wednesday. “I take medication for anxiety and I think I need more medication because I just don’t know, I’m so confused.”
In a wheelchair often, unable to use his arms, Ennis also maintained that his care has diminished due to shift changes and other quality of care issues.
Health Minister Jim Reiter briefly met with Ennis as he attended to another matter at the facility, describing that something “wasn’t right” with the case.
Long-term care costs did increase in the recent provincial budget but Reiter explained the $2689 cost only applied to those already paying $2065, which Ennis was not.
Reiter and his staff promised to look into the case.
“It seems like we’re money-machines, we’re not human, they up the price and we deal with the same care,” Ennis said.
