A clerical error led to a resident of Wascana Rehabilitation Centre (WRC) believing he would face 150 per cent increase to his rent.
Gerald Ennis told 980 CJME about the issue of his projected rent increase after his family received a letter from the provincial government informing them his monthly cost of $1,089 would increase to $2,689.
With the error now corrected, Ennis still faces an increase but his cost will now rise to $1,791.
When he was first admitted to WRC in September 2016, Ennis was charged the minimum rate of $1,086. That is standard policy as officials wait for the financial information of the resident to be provided.
Provincial long-term care, such as WRC, is income-tested. The contribution made by the patients was recently increased in the provincial budget.
Ennis and his family provided his financial information June 9, which is when the letter containing the clerical error was sent out.
It is believed Ennis’ case is a one-off.
